ABOUT
GET TO KNOW ME
My adventure of becoming a massage therapist started in 2003, after I had my 3rd child. My husband and I knew we wanted to have a lifestyle that focused around our family. We moved from the fast paced Silicon Valley to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. It was there I did some soul searching about finding a career that I would be passionate about and still allow for family time. In 2005 I started massage school at Blue Cliff College in Biloxi Mississippi. After Hurricane Katrina, we moved west and eventually settled near Boulder. After much persistence I obtained my 1000 hour certification from Boulder College of Massage Therapy in 2008 and immediately started on my advanced studies at the Colorado School of Healing Arts in Lakewood. While there, I studied Oncology Massage, Cranial Sacral and Trauma Touch. In June 2009, Colorado School of Healing Arts nominated me as Student of the Year to the Colorado Association of Career Colleges & Schools. My massage incorporates many styles of massage. I practice an Integrative style. This means no massage is ever the same. I may use Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial and Trigger Point release, Zen Shiatsu, Cranial Sacral and Reflexology separately or all in one massage depending on your needs. I offer 30 minute, 1 hour and 1 1/2 hour sessions to accommodate all time schedules and budgets. Over the last 18 years, most of my work experience has included Chiropractic in one form or another. I have worked as a Chiropractic Assistant, Office Manager, and I worked for a software company that created chiropractic billing software. I know the benefits of chiropractic care and I am very excited to be back in this industry as a massage therapist. I look forward to meeting you and being a part of your health team.

INTEGRATIVE MASSAGE
INTEGRATIVE MASSAGE
Integrative Style Massage incorporates a diversified method including: Swedish MassageDeep Tissue MassageZen ShiatsuReflexologyandCranial SacralSWEDISH MASSAGEA firm but gentle pressure to ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation. Swedish massage uses long, gliding strokes, kneading of individual muscles, and friction. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical.DEEP TISSUE MASSAGEA type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.ZEN SHIATSUIs based on the principle that energy flows through the body in a series of pathways, called meridians. Sometimes the energy (ki) flow is disrupted or diminished and we may experience discomfort. Zen Shiatsu done on a regular and consistent basis can also strengthen the immune system and allows the body to shift into balance and addresses the root of the problem, not just the symptoms.REFLEXOLOGYIs the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hands with techniques that utilize little or no oil, cream or lotion. Technique application is assessed on the basis of zones and reflex areas. Organs are mapped out on the foot and are supported during treatment. While a state of stress is necessary for life itself, stress without interruption causes wear and tear throughout the body. Reflexology works because it taps into this basic body stress mechanism and interrupts the pattern of stress created by walking and other influences that create imbalance. CRANIAL SACRALCranial Sacral Therapy is a complementary method used to restore the natural movement found between the bones of the skull and sacrum. The therapist applies subtle pressure with their hands to the head and the base of the spine of the clothed client. The purpose of this is to aid the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid throughout the Central Nervous System.

CRANIAL SACRAL
CRANIAL SACRAL
Is a complementary method used to restore the natural movement found between the bones of the skull and sacrum. The therapist applies subtle pressure with their hands to the head and the base of the spine of the clothed client. The purpose of this is to aid the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid throughout the Central Nervous System. Although it is easiest to detect dysfuntion of the Cerebral Spinal Fluid at the base of the skull and the sacrum, I may palpate other connective tissue to compare balances and imbalances.Cranial Sacral Treatment is a gentle balance between compressions and decompressions of movable bones connected by tissue, previously thought to be one solid bone.Cranial Sacral Therapy is an appropriate method to use in most cases because of the gentle movements with affected trauma. It is most commonly used to help relieve headaches, TMJ pain, ADD/ADHD, and chronic fatigue. Most recently, I have been working with a client who has experienced less Vertigo problems after receiving Cranial Sacral Therapy.

ONCOLOGY MASSAGE
ONCOLOGY MASSAGE
Oncology massage refers to massage tailored to the needs of individuals with cancer. This specialized practice requires therapists to be fully educated in and pay close attention to the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of clients in all stages of cancer: diagnosis, treatment, recovery, survivor, or terminal.HOW ONCOLOGY MASSAGE DIFFERS FROM TRADITIONAL MASSAGEOncology Massage differs from traditional massage because this work focuses on helping your body to feel connected and normal, relieving pain, providing deep relaxation, and comforting parts of the body which have been traumatized. It is very light work at first and slowly increases in pressure and technique based on your progress. Depending on issues specific to your body, the position you lie in will be modified to accommodate any surgical or radiation sites or specific medical devices you might have. (Maybe you still have that port for chemotherapy infusions.)Any area of your body that has compromised lymph nodes will be honored with special techniques so as not to cause lymphedema. Lymphedema is a life-long risk, no matter how much time passes after the lymph node procedure. Oncology Massage Therapy integrates safety protocols into all massages when lymph nodes have been compromised. Massage given by someone who does not know or utilize these protocols can actually cause lymphedema. For this reason, you should see only an experienced oncology massage therapist if you have had lymph nodes removed. If you already have lymphedema you can still receive an oncology massage.I have attended a continuing education program dealing specifically with caring for clients with cancer. I believe that relaxation and human touch can be helpful to those in treatment as well as those having completed treatment. Most importantly, you will be met with love, respect and a recognition of who you are and what your own healing process is.PROFOUND EFFECTSCancer patients and health workers report the following benefits at almost every stage of the illness. These are some possible benefits you may (or may not) see: Increased feelings of well-being and normalcy Decreased sense of isolation Positive social interaction Faster wound and scar healing Decreased pain medication Promote bowel activity (in some cases relief from constipation or diarrhea) Decrease in edema and lymphedema due to improved blood and lymph circulation Relief from muscle soreness due to test procedures and prolonged bed rest Helps prevent pressure sores Reduced symptoms cancer treatment side effects such as fatigue and nausea Decreased length of hospital stay

SEATED CHAIR MASSAGE
SEATED CHAIR MASSAGE
This is by far, the most convenient method of massage therapy. Chair massage lasts up to 15 minutes and is done fully clothed. It promotes better circulation and muscle stimulation. This form of massage reduces tension in the back, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Many businesses are utilizing chair massage during working hours for their employees as it has been shown to increase productivity, morale and increases the over-all health and well-being of employees.

BODY WISDOM
BODY WISDOM
JANUARY 2011- BRACHIALISWhen you flex your arm and see that nice definition in your upper arm, which muscle is bulging? biceps brachii. Well yes, but that is only part of the answer. Deep to the biceps brachii lies the brachialis. Because the brachialis lies under the biceps, if it is toned it will make the biceps look even bigger. Its primary purpose is to flex the elbow joint isometrically (static contraction of a muscle without any visible movement in the angle of the joint). Although the bicep is often more active during flexion, the brachialis is actually the strongest muscle involved in this movement. Due to its location, the muscle is important in any sport or activity where the arm and elbow are used extensively such as tennis. Any movement that requires the elbow to flex will involve the use of the brachialis as well as the bicep. Pushing, pulling and lifting with the arms will all invoke the muscle. The brachialis muscle also provides stability in the elbow against the triceps, which is important in movements such as throwing.NOVEMBER 2010-FASCIAThere are many functions of fascia but the one we will be focusing on is a thin layer of connective tissue that lies under the skin, but above muscles, and allows the movement of muscles. Have you ever removed the skin off of chicken before dinner? It is the whiteish sticky substance between the meat and skin. There are several fascial chains; one fascial chain is a single structure from the soles of the feet to the inside of the cranium. What do you think happens when there is dysfunction, such as scar tissue or a strain to a muscle under this fiber, in that fascial chain? The fascia binds to the muscle and does not allow that smooth movement and can cause adhesions or knots. So it stands to reason, if you have aggravation in the fascia of your mid-back it can alter the way your fascia is allowing movement in your calf or on the sole of your foot, perhaps even mimicking plantar fasciitis. Or it can cause that pesky headache that never seems to go away. If this issue is not addressed it can change your posture due to the trauma of the fascia. During massage, I use myofascial techniques to help the muscle fibers and the fascia to keep from binding to each other. I can briefly incorporate this into a massage or we can spend 30 minutes using warm towels to relax the tissue while slowly separating the fascia and muscle to allow for more flexibility. OCTOBER 2010-MASSETERThe masseter is one of the most powerful muscles for its size in the body . The masseter arises from the cheekbone and is inserted at the rear of the jawbone. This muscle functions to chew food and derives its name from the Greek for chewing, and is associated with angry and aggressive states. The masseter can be felt at the side of the jaw when the teeth are clenched. Trigger points in the masseter can cause a frontal headache and pain in the sinuses, teeth, ears and temporomandibular joints (TMJ disorder). They can be responsible for a sense of sinus pressure or congestion. These trigger points are also the cause of that familiar maddening itch deep inside the ear. Masseter can also produce tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and may be involved with bruxism (grinding of the teeth). It is overworked by repetitive habits, such as gum chewing, nail biting or clenching the teeth. Although emotional problems can lead to major problems in the muscle, the pain and dysfunctions associated with this muscle may also contribute to emotional stress.SEPTEMBER 2010-TEACHINGTeaching can be stressful. Lack of planning time, a heavy work load, overcrowding, salary inequities, and problematic student behavior can lead to teacher stress. Teacher stress was first identified as a work issue in the 1930s and continues to be identified as a problem for many teachers today. A recent survey by Optum Research, a Minnesota-based company that studies work-related health risks, found that 88 percent of teachers experience moderate to high levels of stress. Prolonged exposure to stress, referred to as chronic stress, is the most detrimental. It can actually change brain chemistry and function and thus lower resistance to disease. Stress can also initiate the sickness response; e.g., people may develop somatic symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches. In addition, stress can bring about depression and lethargy, sleep and eating disorders, substance abuse, hypertension, and increased insulin resistance, which may lead to Type II Diabetes.Everyone knows that college is stressful. The stress often begins as early as the admissions process when you have to fill out applications, write the perfect personal statement essay, and choose the right school. Attending college introduces new stressors. You may work or be involved in extracurricular activities, forcing you to balance these activities with homework. You may also have problems with a roommate or exams. Stress often makes college students sick because it has a negative impact on immune systems. The five biggest causes of college stress are: peer pressure, competition, separation from family, freedom, and choosing a major/career.Twenty preschoolers ages 3 to 5 were randomly assigned to either a massage therapy group or a story-reading group. The children were given a temperament rating based on how their behavior was seen by their teachers, along a scale that ranged from calm and easygoing to anxious and high-strung. Those in the massage group were given one 15-minute massage. Children in the control group were read a Dr. Seuss story for 15 minutes, while sitting close together in a carpeted area. The skills pre-test was given to both groups prior to the reading or massage. Following the reading or massage, a skills post-test was given. Results showed that children who received massage were more accurate on the tests, in contrast to those in the control group, whose scores either stayed the same or decreased in each post-test. If massage can help preschoolers relax what could it do for you?AUGUST 2010-PIRIFORMIS SYNDROMEThe piriformis muscle is one of the external rotators of the hip and leg. This means that as the muscle works, it helps to turn the foot and leg outward. The piriformis muscle lies deep to the gluteal muscles. Problems in the piriformis muscle can cause problems with the sciatic nerve. This is because the sciatic nerve runs under (and sometimes through) the piriformis muscle on its way out of the pelvis. The piriformis muscle can squeeze and irritate the sciatic nerve in this area, leading to the symptoms of sciatica. This referred pain down the leg is also known as pseudo-sciatica. Some common irritations to the piriformis muscle are: exercising on hard surfaces, like concrete; exercising on uneven ground; sitting for long periods of time; tight, stiff muscles in the lower back, hips and buttocks; and running or walking with your toes pointed out. Pain (or a dull ache) is the most common and obvious symptom associated with piriformis syndrome. This is most often experienced deep within the hip and buttocks region, but can also be experienced anywhere from the lower back to the lower leg. APRIL 2010- MASSAGE AND WEIGHT LOSSHave you heard the claims that massage breaks down fat capsules and you can loose weight with massage? Unfortunately, these claims have not been substantiated by the Touch Research Institute. If it were that easy to loose weight, our country would not have a weight problem! So what do massage and weight loss have to do with each other? Proper exercise, nutrition and health guidelines are all important components of feeling good. Going to the gym sometimes is difficult. You go to the gym, exercise like crazy and 1-2 days later feel like garbage and the expectation is, that you drag yourself back there for more torture. Massage helps shorten that recovery time! Your range of motion and flexibility may both be increased with massage. Massage will also help reduce muscle soreness with stretching, kneading, and rubbing. Your body will spend less time recovering and less time between workouts, which allows for maximum opportunity to burn calories. Massage is known to help you relax and reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. There s a link between high cortisol levels and storage of body fat, particularly visceral abdominal body fat (also known as intra-abdominal fat). Visceral fat is stored deeper in the abdominal cavity and around the internal organs, whereas regular fat is stored below the skin (known as subcutaneous fat). When your body is stressed it can slow down or stop food digestion and this will build up in your intestines. After muscles are exercised, vital nutrients must be supplied to them so they can recover and rebuild themselves. Massage maximizes the supply of these nutrients and oxygen through increased blood flow, which helps the muscles to grow and burn calories as a result. Massage has some benefits to help aid you in achieving your weight loss goals. However, the only way to loose fat and get healthier is to watch what you eat and increase your calorie burning. If you expect to just lie on the table and have the fat melt off your thighs, don't waste your money or your time. Remember, weight loss is about leading a balanced lifestyle and massage is an essential part of any balanced lifestyle. MARCH 2010- CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPYCranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a combination of hands on work and self regulation therapy. What does that mean? It means that I help the bones and sutures from head to tail bone compress, decompress or traction in a gentle manner and I help re-teach your body how to be open to allow proper cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) movement. CSF brings nutrients and filters the garbage to your brain and spinal cord. The CSF is like your kidneys; as a matter of fact in Traditional Chinese Medicine the brain is considered an outgrowth of the kidney. With gentle placement of my hands I am feeling for improper movement of some of the cranial bones such as the sacrum (tail bone), occiput ( back of head above neck), sphenoid (between eye and ear), temporals (ear to back of head), parietals (side of skull), frontal (above eyes), ethmoid (behind nose), zygoma (cheek bone), maxillae (above teeth), and mandible (jaw). I am also looking for symmetry on both sides of your body and making sure your CSF is flowing the same at the head and feet. What conditions can cranial sacral help with: headaches, migraines, TMJ, eye fatigue, depression, anxiety, vertigo, and sinusitis (to name a few).Causes of dysfunction: auto accidents, dental/orthodontic visits, emotional stress, physical fights, birth, and pregnancy (again, to name a few).FEBRUARY 2010- SOLE TO SOULWhat is reflexology? It is a gentle form of therapeutic foot massage. Reflexology has been documented in physician history since 2500 BC. Physicians understood the body's organs to be mapped out on the bottom of the feet and used gentle pressure from their thumbs and fists to activate the body's natural healing. The goal of reflexology is to trigger balance in the body by reducing tension and inducing relaxation. Many cultures understand the importance of feet in maintaining physical, mental and spiritual balance including; Egypt, China, and the American Indians. Each day, when we take our 10,000 steps, our foot gathers information; pressure, stretch, and movement. All of these add needed stress to the foot so each step is not new experience. When this stress is not released it becomes knee pain, back pain, headaches or pains that can not be understood by western medicine. Stress is difficult to avoid, and some stress is needed to get through your day. Each person internalizes their stress in different ways. With reflexology, tension is relaxed, vascular constriction reduced and blood and nerve supply flow more freely, allowing oxygen and nutrients to make their way to where they are needed. Reflexology is only a complimentary bodywork style and clients with blood clots, 1st trimester pregnancies, and clients with unstable blood pressure should not receive reflexology treatments. JANUARY 2010 - SHOULDER MUSCLESHow many shoulder muscles do you have? 5? 10? 15? The answer is 18. If you did any lifting, decorating, building, driving on ice or sleeping away from home, you are probably experiencing some shoulder discomfort.Your shoulder is complex; This joint is a shallow ball and socket type joint so it needs 18 shoulder muscles to make sure it keeps its integrity. Your shoulder muscles are Trapezius, Rhomboid Major/Minor, Levator Scapula, Serratus Anterior, Subclavius, Pectoralis Major/Minor, Latissimus Dorsi, Teres Major/Minor, Deltoid, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Subscapularis, Coracobrachialis, Biceps Brachii, and Triceps Brachii.Sometimes your scalenes (neck muscles) will refer pain to the side or back of your shoulder. This means you have a tight spot or a knot in your neck that needs to be worked out to relieve a pain in your shoulder.Do you know anyone who has injured their rotator cuff muscle? This is a very vague term. Your rotator cuff is 4 muscles (your SITS muscles) Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor and Subscapularis. Have you heard of Frozen Shoulder syndrome? This is when one of your muscles does not allow you shoulder to move away from your body. These can be painful and debilitating conditions. Massage of the shoulder joint muscles may relieve or eliminate this discomfort. DECEMBER 2009 - BREATHINGHow do you breathe? Are you a mouth breather, chest breather or a stomach breather? The answer should be a combination of stomach and chest. Try this exercise as part of your daily stress reduction:Stand erect with feet shoulder-width apart, arms and hands relaxed downward, body relaxed as if it were anchored to the ground through feet and to the sky from top of the head, shoulders slightly forward and eyes closed. Focus on lower abdomen (belly) and imagine a small balloon in that space; breather in slowly and deeply through nostrils, imagining the balloon inflating slowly all of the way into your lungs; hold a few seconds; slowly exhale through mouth, imagining the balloon gently deflating; repeat 10 or more times. See how different your body feels. Are you more relaxed? Do you feel lighter? Dizzy? Great?! This is an exercise to practice several times a day, even while sitting at a red light (especially during rush hour!), and soon the body will develop the habit. Then, when stress threatens, the body will automatically go into the relaxation mode.NOVEMBER 2009 - PSOAS MAJORBest known to your butcher as tenderloin or filet mignon. Psoas Major is believed to contribute to 10 -15% of cases of Low Back Pain.It is a core back muscle that is the most important of all postural muscles. The Psoas has two primary functions: •When the leg is free to move, as when walking, it is a strong flexor of the thigh at the hip joint. •When the leg is planted firmly, as when standing or sitting still, it bends the lower spine forward. This action is used to maintain the balance of the trunk when sitting.Indications Psoas Major needs work:•Low back pain•Pain in front of thigh•Difficulty getting up from seated position•Abnormal walking•Scoliosis•Pseudo-appendicitis•Gall bladder painTEA
